Different scientifical conferences or forums are great opportunties, how to present reached results of ones's research. They are organized throughout the whole year, their main season, however, is from April to September. Each conference is typically aimed at a particular scientifical topic and therefore a community. Mostly an active participation is demanded.
Each of the active participation on a conference demands sending of an abstract. It is, simply to say, a brief and apt summary of the research project. It has to be usually sent couple of weeks or months before the conference actually takes place.
The active participation itself comprises a presentation of one's research. The presentation is done either in a form of a lecture or by designing a poster. A typical scientific poster is about a meter wide and one and a half meter tall (the dimensions may differ). It sums up the aims of a project, methodology and above all the results with the help of short paragraphs, pictures, graphs and tables.
The participant may usually choose the way of presentation. However, a simple rule is always on mind: the more important the conference is, the more important speakers are picked up (or invited directly). Thus a (perhaps so far) "no-name" scientist will get a chance to speak on rather a minor event.

A scientific conference takes four to six days. It is composed of series of lectures (and obligatory coffee brakes :-) ). The posters than are presented in special "poster sessions". The visitors and participants of a conference have a chance to read through them. Moreover, as the author stands next to the poster, (s)he can explain and/or discuss particular parts of the project. Each poster has its number: one day odd numbers are presented, the other day it is the even one's turn.
Beside the professional character of the conferences, a social programme is included. Mostly social dinners, concerts or trips are organized.
